Organization's Mission/Description

The Supported Training & Employment Program (STEP) for Emancipated Foster Youth is an internship program sponsored by the Human Resources Department and the Human Services Agency (HSA).  STEP provides paid internships and employment skills training during a one-year employment program designed to introduce youth who are at risk of underemployment to the “world of work.”

The program focuses on four areas:

  1. Job readiness and skills building
  2. Job shadowing and employment coaching
  3. Hands-on, paid work experience in one of several possible County departments
  4. Transition planning
  • Requirements: Must be a youth ages 18-24 and be a current, non-minor dependent (AB12) or former foster youth who aged out of foster care. (Candidates must submit proof of foster care status upon request.)
  • Duration: One-year
  • Hours: Flexible
  • Location: Across various department locations in San Mateo County
